Walking Foot Quilt Along - Part 2

Welcome Back!

In Part 1 of the Walking Foot Quilt Along you prepared your quilt top and now you want to quilt it. We will be using the “Whirl” design, Page 1-12 from Walking Foot Quilting Designs.

Marking:
Make a template that is the size of your quilt block and mark the centre on each side. I use a template so I don’t have to remember my measurement and I won’t accidentally make an incorrect marking. It is also helpful if you forgot to set your machine to a quarter inch when piecing your blocks and they don’t end up at a measurement that is easily divided by two.

Design Placement:
For this project, we are going to place a full diamond (purple) at the centre of the quilt rather than a half diamond (green) which is in the centre of the diagram.

Mark your quilt top as shown in the diagram on the left.

Mark into the border as if there is also a block there. Stay a 1/4 inch away from the edge to allow for the binding.

Stitching:

Always begin stitching on the batting just off the quilt top. Stitch to the mark a quarter inch onto the quilt top and stop with your needle down and your foot up. Pivot your quilt so it is aimed directly at the next mark you need to stitch to.
Continue stitching in this manner across the quilt and sew off onto the batting on the other side. Cut your thread, pull your quilt back towards you and stitch the next line in the same manner.
Make your next set of markings and continue stitching.

NOTE:
Remember to use your intersection as a mark as well. This is a good place to stop and readjust if you need to.

Continue marking and stitching, following the diagrams until your quilt looks like this. (left)

For this Quilt Along, do not stitch the edge lines. (blue)

Turn your quilt a quarter turn and repeat the process.
I hope you're enjoying this quilt along. Don't forget to post your progress. Use these hashtags and tag me so I see your work.
