Edge-to-Edge Walking Foot Quilting Designs

It's already May and I just realized that I have been so busy working on my new book and some new patterns this year that I haven't posted anything yet. It is now available in my Etsy shop along with my first book and my patterns.

COVID quilting

We're all stuck at home and some people are having a hard time coping with it so I decided to start an online quilt along. I had over 400 people sign up to the page and there were 110 finished quilt tops posted. I named the quilt LINKED not only because it looks like links but because we were all linked together through social media at a time when we needed to be socially distancing.

The first quilt along was so successful that I ran a second one. There were over 125 DAISY CHAIN quilt tops completed during the second quilt along. Patterns for both are available for purchase.

Sewing with kids is COOL

Noor got his Big Boy Quilt this year

I missed the kids so much during Covid and I hope that we don't get a resurgence and have to go through that again. When they were finally able to come for a visit we did some sewing. Manitoba was having a heat wave and it was just too hot to go outside for most of the day so Aya made her troll a quilt and Sareim made his bear a t-shirt. They both did a great job.
Noor kept reminding me, "Grandma, Sareim got his big boy quilt when he was 5, I'm 5 now you know. So I had to make sure he received this quilt before his 6th birthday which he did.

Belgian Lace

I hosted another mystery quilt along on Facebook. Melissa's Magical Quilt Along. As always I have trouble naming my quilts so I asked for help from the members of the group. I didn't use a name from them but did use the ideas of poppies, or Flanders Fields. Here is what I wrote when I decided on the name:

So, what to name the quilt. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I didn't pick any of your names but your suggestions got me thinking. This was my thought process:
A few of you mentioned poppies. When I think of poppies I think of Remembrance Day and Flanders Fields. My grandfather, Alberic Marginet, was a teenager living in Belgium during World War I. He was too young to fight in the war but not too young to dig trenches and so was one of the many boys and men who worked through the cold and the rain to dig trenches for the soldiers.
Next I thought of my Belgian heritage (all four lines of my ancestry are from Belgium). Lace is a big part of Belgian history going back hundreds of years. When I started reading about the floral patterns laid down on gridwork to make the intricate laces I knew I was onto something. This quilt is just that, we made the grids then laid down the floral design. And so the name of this pattern, in honor of my grandfather and the many others who fought or helped in any way towards the war effort which solidified our freedom, is Belgian Lace.

I hosted a mini workshop for Common Threads on December 11 and we all made table runners.

A few other things I made this year

As a Janome Artisan I write a blog post a few times a year. In November I blogged about making these little trees. You can read how I made these here.
A Quilter's Face Masks
We all have precuts we don't know what to do with. One pack of 42 5" precuts will make you 9 reversible masks, 1 storage pouch and a sanitizer key ring.
Some mug rugs for Christmas gifts.
